ATP’s DEI Committee upcoming webinar is Psychosocial Underminers of Test Performance among Disadvantaged and Minority Groups: A Mindset Perspective. Join us on April 26th at 10:30 AM (Central Time) for an engaging discussion of factors that undermine test performance, especially among disadvantaged and minority groups and how we can start addressing those factors. There is limited space.  Register in advance for this one-hour webinar!

John Jones, Andre Allen, and Kelly Dages from FifthTheory, LLC will be facilitating the discussion and asking participants to discuss three key questions. This discussion is highly relevant to organizations concerned about racial differences in passing rates, high failure rates overall, challenges with their retesting model, and providing reasonable accommodations, to name a few.

A test taker’s mindset determines their attitudes and behaviors around preparing for and mastering high-stakes tests. Mindset can determine the test taker’s level of motivation and commitment toward test preparation along with the confidence and resilience during test taking. Psychosocial underminers may introduce obstacles that inhibit a strong mindset for disadvantaged and minority groups. Research can help us understand the mindset of disadvantaged and minority groups and identify evidence-based approaches to increase awareness of and eventually counteract the psychosocial underminers.

This webinar seeks to start a conversation about how the mindset of test takers is influenced by psychosocial underminers, especially test takers from disadvantaged and minority groups. We will also talk about how we can start working on evidence-based approaches to address test taker mindset. The discussion will follow a Kiva protocol, where small groups can contribute to a broader global discussion that allows all voices to be heard. During the webinar the participants will discuss the following three questions:

  •     What is Test Mastery Mindset and how can it be self-assessed, managed and strengthened?
  •     What are psychosocial underminers and how is your organization addressing the adverse impacts of this reality among marginalized and disadvantaged test takers?
  •     What type of science and research is needed to help us understand and counteract emerging sources of test inequality (e.g., the intersection between race and neurodiversity)?
